Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo swoop in and hand-rear 5 lovely penguin chicks  

Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo have their fingers full within the penguin nursery this month – feeding and caring for 5 hungry Humboldt penguin chicks, after their mother and father have been unable to take care of them.

The fluffy fivesome – who all hatched on the conservation zoo between Saturday 14 and Sunday 24 April – have spent 4 weeks cosying as much as a cuddly toy penguin below the warming glow of a warmth lamp, with devoted keepers trying after them in shifts. 

ZSL London Zoo penguin keeper Suzi Hyde stated: “Throughout breeding season, we verify the nests on Penguin Seashore each day, maintaining a watch out for any chicks who may not be feeding sufficient or whose mother and father are struggling to care for his or her brood.  

“These 5 chicks all had first-time mother and father who wanted slightly bit of additional help, so we have been comfortable to swoop in – with slightly assist from a couple of gentle toy penguins, donated by the Zoo store, for them to snuggle as much as.” 

Lined in gentle gray feathers, the tiny flightless birds are weighed each morning and hand-fed 3 times a day with a particular weight-reduction plan of blended fish, nutritional vitamins and minerals – referred to by ZSL London Zoo’s keepers as a ‘penguin milkshake’; as they develop larger, they’ll even be weaned onto small parts of recent fish to help their growth.

In celebration of ZSL Patron HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the 5 chicks have all been named after necessary moments in Her Majesty’s 70-year reign: Hillary, after Sir Edmund Hillary scaling Everest in 1953; Apollo, to mark the moon touchdown in 1969; Bobby, in honour of England captain Bobby Moore main a World Cup win in 1966; Bernie, after Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the web in 1989; and Mac, after Ellen MacArthur, who sailed around the globe continuous to set a brand new world file in 2005. 

Suzi added: “When these 5 chicks arrived, we determined to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee by naming them Hillary, Apollo, Bobby, Bernie and Mac, after among the historic moments which have taken place throughout her unimaginable reign.  

“We’re excitedly counting right down to the Zoo’s Zoobilee Competition, which can happen between Saturday 28 Could and Sunday 5 June – a Jubilee celebration that includes garden video games, candy treats and a brand new outside gallery paying tribute to ZSL’s longest-serving royal patron.”
